Earlier this week I used the phrase ‘indefinable liberty’ with M to describe a character-kindness she’d offered me that day, something she did without too much forethought and that made, tenderly, a space for weird me. I think that phrase is indispensable! I think it represents — and the actions that represent it — an essential, existential want, the yearning that pecks at our thick heads for something beneath, beautifully hiding. ‘Indefinable liberty’ seems just under the surface: we are there, but it’s not yet here.
